A new feature in the Chicago Tribune (The day of rest, April 13, 2008 by Jim Mateja)  about the determinate operating costs per mile for a diversity of different vehicles caught my eye–not wonderful considering how much I’ve written on commuting and its event of the livelihood of a musician.

The cost of gas rose 31.5 percent in 2007, which instrument that the average consumer (driving 10,000 miles a year) will part with between $5,510 and $9,095 to have influence a 2008 protoplast car.  This tournure is based on gal, oil, tires, and preservation–parking or tolls are not included in these calculations.

As a full-duration freelancer, I herd around 50,000 miles per year between 2000 and 2007 (when I "saw the medium of vision" and realized that doing all this driving was consummate insanity).  At these aforementioned rates, I would have been expenditure somewhere between $27,550 and $45,475 for conveyance operating expenses in 2008 if I had kept up this step of gigging.

No amazement I never had any money!
